Review: 'Remedy Club, The'
'True Hand True Heart'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '27th March 2020'

Our Rating:
The Remedy Club may be Irish, but they create authentic sounding US country rock. The 10 songs on ‘True Hand True Heart’ have an uptempo, feel-good vibe about them, even when delving into less cheery subject matters and situations, all of which are classic country staples. Thematically, they say the album touches on ‘love, loss and a longing for unity and peace in place of division and building walls between us,’ and ‘ultimately the songs are about humanity’s compassion and kindness over power and greed and finding that connection with ourselves and others.’

That compassion and kindness feels somewhat strained right now, so it’s something of a relief to hear life-affirming optimism in song. Thankfully, it’s not all sugar-coated sweetness.

‘Whiskey’s got me passed out on the floor / Looks like we got ourselves a situation / I guess I lost count after four, or maybe more…’ McEvoy sings reflectively at the start of ‘Fire and Gasoline’, a song about loss and self-sabotage.

The title track is all the hook and all the harmonica, and the pair share vocal duties throughout, often together, and they pitch some strong, sweet melodies. This gives them a distinctive sound, and it’s a sound of optimism, which pours from the rolling piano and sliding lap steel on ‘Let the Good Times Roll’. And The Remedy Club bring good times, alright.
