Review: 'Healy, Kat'
'Bread & Roses'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '3rd April 2020'

Our Rating:
With all gigs and gatherings cancelled, pubs closed and the nation on lockdown – to the extent people are shitting themselves about going to the shop for fear of being stopped and challenged by police – it’s wonderful to see music-makers around the globe being innovative with technology with virtual gigs, and instead of holding back on new releases, filling the world with more.

‘Bread and Roses’, the latest single from Scottish singer-songwriter Kat Healy is pitched as ‘a joyful collaboration with Scottish singer Karina Smillie, and another example of spreading the joy of music in desperate times’, and ‘an uplifting, fresh take on the original version (lyric by poet, James Oppenheim) with a soaring vocal arrangement packed with swirling harmonies offering listeners a chance to enjoy a raw, strikingly honest interpretation of the song.’

Oppenheim’s poem was first published in 2011 and first set to music in 2017, and also quickly gained association with American woman’s suffrage, but has since become more broadly a message of strength and stoicism – and so its relevance now requires no explanation.

The joy and straight-up magnificence lies in its simplicity. The two vocals merge as one against a barely-present hum and rhythm forged by a distant drum and hand claps. It’s a quintessential folk song, and the breath of fresh air everyone needs while stuck indoors.
