Review: 'ShitKid'
'Waste of Time'

Our Rating:
So it turns out that with touring and most other activity suspended, ShitKid’s plans have had to be adjusted. It’s a familiar story by now, and one I must have read a good several dozen times by now.

As the press blurb explains, ‘Åsa Söderqvist didn’t intend to release two ShitKid albums in 2020. She should have spent this spring on the road, playing shows in support of January’s Duo Limbo/"Mellan himmel å helvete", and making a return to Austin for South by South West. Instead, like the rest of the world, she found herself holed up at home, the COVID-19 pandemic having shredded her best-laid plan for the year. “Suddenly, I wasn’t going anywhere, and if we weren’t playing shows, I didn’t have to rehearse. I had a lot of time on my hands.”

Ahead of the new full-length album 20/20 ShitKid (out August 21 via PNKSLM Recordings), which follows the Melvins & Paul Leary collaboration LP Duo Limbo/“Mellan himmel å helvete” and the original motion picture soundtrack Always Amber, we get ‘Waste of Time’.

The good news is that it’s far from it: instead, it’s four minutes of absolutely essential alternative rock/ pop, a massive grunge /slacker / shoegaze / electro crossover with a seething bass and a city of reverb surrounding both the vocals and instruments.

There’s a massive treble burst behind the propulsive rhythm section that means it sounds like a collision between Curve and The Jesus and Mary Chain, making for a near-perfect melodic noise fix.
