Review: 'Manntra'
'Barren King'

-  Label: 'No Cut Entertainment'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '12.2.21.'

Our Rating:
As far as I can remember this is the first record I've reviewed by a fully Croatian band, in this case Manntra play Battle folk metal that sounds far more Baltic than Balkan in inspiration, as well as often sounding like they are making music from within the Arctic Circle. All 3 songs on this single are from the bands forthcoming album Monster Mind Consuming that is out on No Cut Entertainment on March 26.

Barren King opens like a cross between Hoven Droven, Hedningarna and Turisas as this is folksy battle metal with a good marching beat and is it throat singing or just the bagpipes underneath things as well as yodelling backing vocals and whistles and strings driving it along, this is complex and catchy.

Slave opens with a siren voice calling to the auto-tune for redemption before the male vocal comes in to sing about eternal darkness, this veers from whispered ululations to full on battle metal storms and back again as if you are on a very stormy sea that suddenly becomes becalmed before the tempest returns. With the female backing vocals sounding a bit like Anita Livstrand.

Ori Ori makes me want to complete the chant Oh Ori Ori Orient, but this song doesn't come close to doing that, on a full-on Battle metal cry for glory on the field of battle. this is like Turisas with hints of Oomph but with backing vocals that sound a bit like Cristina from Lacuna Coil.
