Review: 'Poggy'
'No More I (EP)'

-  Label: 'Mint 400 Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '11th June 2021'

Our Rating:
Mary-Anne Hatton – aka Poggy – returns just 5 months after her debut album, ‘Woman’, with a new EP in the shape of ‘No More I’. If her debut drew on a lifetime being raised around and playing music as part of a family of 6 down in Kent and showcased a musical eclecticism ‘mixing elements of jazz, world and folk to create a kaleidoscopic journey through song’, then the three songs on ‘No More I’ further explore that palette.

‘Amidst the Ocean Pines Break’ is reflective, light acoustic folk, with wispy atmospherics and laced with subtle strings, and a lo-fi-, reverby sound that’s at once vintage, contemporary, and timeless. The sing-sing melody of the title track renders it simple, but effective, the layers of harmony most beguiling and charming to the ear. The sparse arrangements swells to include drums and bass toward the end, bringing a nice dynamic to both the song and the EP as a whole, as ‘No Ending’ returns to spartan simplicity, the acoustic guitar accompaniment placing Poggy’s charming voice front and foremost.
