Review: 'Kut, The'
'Animo'

-  Label: 'Criminal Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '15th November 2021'

Our Rating:
It’s still a source of pride that Whisperin and Hollering have been covering The Kut since their long-deleted debut EP, ‘Poisonest’ in 2005, and that had an early introduction to them via 2009 single release ‘Doesn’t Matter Anymore’.

The joy of tracking the band’s career has been witnessing, after significant setbacks, their ascent, from reclaiming independent status to being a unit-shifting, chart act who are not making significant inroads into the American market. And they’re not an act you can grumble about selling out, because they’ve remained true to their ethos since day 1, and have simply evolved – in leaps and bounds – and honed their songwriting craft over the years.

This single, they announce, and the forthcoming album are both funded by Arts Council England. Wait, what? Album? This is cause for excitement, but then, so is this single, which is a cracker.

‘Animo’ (meaning courage or spirit) reminds us of what appealed about The Kut back in the early days: choppy, post-punk guitars and a strong vocal melody with a hint of melancholy against the uptempo, upbeat drive. It’s an exhilarating tune, with no shortage of guts, and the post-apocalyptic tribal-themed video is pretty cool, too.
