Our Rating:
I seemed to have completely missed one of the comebacks of 2021 when this single was released by Colin Moulding back in July, but I have finally got to it and well what a delight it is to have the first ever fully solo material from Colin since XTC came to a conclusion in 2006.

The Hardest Battle is a Beach Boys influenced power pop gem that wants you to fight to be yourself and live your life to the fullest and is a wonderful comeback from one of the voices of XTC, it has a very full production and needs to be heard a good few times to hear everything going on.

The second song on the single is Say It (Original Version) that keeps the essential message of being yourself and in this case telling those you love what you think of them rather than bottling it all up and then regretting not having told your nearest and dearest the things you really should have said. This has a very nice memorable tune with loads of detail in the production and was originally written for an abandoned XTC album.

The single then closes with a second version of The Hardest Battle in this case the First Exploratory Demo that is more stripped back that allows the listener to luxuriate in the vocals and the harmonies within.
