There’s more than one side to Mean Mary. A clue to this lies in the fact that she looks just as good in a classic flannel cowgirl shirt as she does in a black leather jacket.
Four weeks after showing off her country folk roots in the excellent ‘Portrait of a Woman’ album, she uses this EP to step up the twang and explore her rock 'n' roll moves with electric banjo and electric guitar.
The change of mood is most evident in the opening tune Penelope Rose and the closing solo of Sparrow Alone. The latter seems to be an avian nod to the 2013 album 'The Year of the Sparrow'.
In between these tunes are two western styled songs: Fugitive and Seven League Shoes.
Mary’s playing is inspired and she’s backed by her band The Contrarys who are Allen Marshall on drums and David Larsen on bass.
More in this same vein is promised in volume 2,scheduled for release in June 2023.
