Review: 'Shit Present'
'Fuck It'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '25th January 2023'

Our Rating:
A strong name and title count for a lot. Shit Present have been around a while, so I’m not entirely sure how they’ve bypassed me for so long, but ‘Fuck It’ speaks for itself, a precise summary of a nihilistic abandonment. Yes, we’ve all hit that point some time or another, where you just throw everything over your shoulder and declare yourself done. We all have our limits, and when you get there, ‘fuck it’ is THE response. Words are difficult sometimes, especially in moments of extreme emotional pressure.

‘Fuck It’ sees the band break a three-year deadlock after Iona Cairns hit a wall of writers’ block, with a tune they began as ‘a joke cause it sounded like that Feeder song about drinking cider from a lemon. It is a manic song about feeling like you want to start arguments with everyone you love and bring up stuff from the past.’

The song is a scuzzy blast of lo-fi guitars and buoyant vocals. It’s a shade emo – which, to be fair is how it’s pitched – but with heavy hints of The Wedding Present and that c86 indie sound with some punky elements thrown into the mix. ‘Fuck It’ balances easy on the ear and melodic with some big guitars and bold ambition,- and they deliver on that. It doesn’t matter if it’s not your scene. Strong, tuneful, and fun, it’s hard to fault.
