Review: 'WILLIAMS BROTHERS, THE'
'Memories to Burn'

-  Label: 'Regional Records'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '25th November 2022'-  Catalogue No: 'RR222'

Our Rating:
The Williams Brothers, from Henderson, Nevada, released three albums on Warner Brothers between 1987 and 1993 but although ‘Memories to Burn’ was originally recorded and mixed back in 1995, it is only now getting an official release due to record label disputes.

After over a quarter of century under wraps, one might expect it to sound badly dated but this brand of old school country music is never really out of time. The harmonies of twins Andrew and David have been compared to The Everly Brothers and still stand up pretty well.

Producer, songwriter, and Lone Justice bassist Marvin Etzioni suggested that the country-tinged songs should be recorded as spontaneously as possible which is ironic since it’s taken an age for the public to actually hear them. The brothers sang live in the studio with backing provided by Greg Leisz on steel guitar, Don Heffington on drums and Etzioni himself on bass.

Etzioni also wrote four of the tunes including the title track. The only song that the twins penned themselves is She’s Got That Look In Her Eyes.

There are two covers of Robbie Fulks’ songs (Tears Only Run One Way and the wonderfully titled She Took A Lot Of Pills (And Died)).

Listeners are treated to respectful versions of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Piney Wood Hills, Iris DeMent’s classic Let The Mystery Be and The Kinks’ Death of a Clown.

With a total playing time of just over 20 minutes, it’s more like an EP than a full blown album but well worth preserving and hearing none the less.
