Review: 'EYE'
'GOING DOWN'

-  Label: 'SELF RELEASED'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: 'MARCH 2005'

Our Rating:
EYE are a brooding, well groomed and pale-looking quartet doing their bit for pan-European harmony by comprising themselves of an Englishman, an Italian, a Finn and a Swede. ‘Going Down’ is the third EP since their formation in 2003.

Both the title track and the brief ‘Liars’ are very heavily influenced by Placebo, being moody and quasi-Gothic numbers replete with chiming guitars, rolling drumbeats and angsty vocals. There’s also a bit of The Banshees in ‘Going Down’, particularly the Budgie-style drums. Last track ‘Following My Dreams’ contains some of Joy Division’s atmospheric maudlin in the verse but fails to register much in the chorus.

There’s something not quite clicking into place with EYE and I suspect it’s the song-writing which is yet to distinguish itself sufficiently to really make you sit up and take notice. That said, they’re tight in the playing and there’s enough evidence on show to say that they have the potential to develop a sound of their own, but they’ll need to improve in the tunes department to really set tongues wagging.
