Review: 'ANOTHER HUNDRED MILES'
'Move The Fader'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '9th May 2010'

Our Rating:
Another Hundred Miles revolve around the duo of Douglas Holmes and Daniel Maynard who met up in Rhode Island and began writing music together in 1996. This is their long overdue debut studio album.

Perhaps it is no surprise to find that the eleven songs have a lived in feel and give the impression of representing the twosome working through various styles and moods.

The essential ingredient is a refreshingly no-nonsense take on the No Depression sound of the late eighties. This brand of raw-edged Alt.Country is so well realised that you can practically smell the sweaty shirts and visualise the dusty roads somewhere out in the back end of beyond.

The Uncle Tupelo connection is most conspicuous on the title tune and on tracks like Kicked You Out The Door and Drive On.

Alongside this, they offer up some frantic Cowpunk (Fifth Wheel / Against The Wall) and a clutch of surprisingly tender love songs. The latter includes Until The Morning Is Gone, a great song of loss that probably should have been the title track. It captures the lonesome blues and the "tired feeling of being" with a real sureness of touch.

Even better is Any Of This, a wistful tale of a life viewed from the wrong end of a tether and one of several tracks to feature a piano refrain that subtly broadens the scope of their sound.

The music scene has changed a lot since the punk fuelled antidote to the Nashville establishment first made its mark but this album is a reminder that this type of modern twang can still sound fresh and vital.

My fear is that this is the type of record that may disappear without trace. I hope I'm wrong because there is a warmth and authenticity here deserving of a nobler fate.
