Review: 'Cheek of Her, The'
'Megaphonic EP'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '14th January 2012'

Our Rating:
The Cheek of Her is, in effect a solo artist, although Helen Dooley realises her music with the assistance of a fair few additional musicians.

Dooley’s style is one that’s hard to pin down: it’s overtly poppy, with an indie flavour, as well as a keen sense of classic 60s. But we’re not talking about another Duffy here: The Cheek of Her isn’t a vehicle for ersatz retro schtick, and the five tracks on this EP abundantly demonstrate that Dooley is a thoroughly modern gal with stacks of sass. Just check the hookline on ‘Beauty Queen’: ‘I’m no beauty queen / I’m not one for those magazines/ it’s alright, it’s ok / there’s more to this girl’.

Feisty and fun, The Cheek of Her make a welcome change from artificial airbrushed pop-star perfection while presenting us with some tidy pop tunes. Nice.
