Sri Lankan choir join ONE WORLD relief single.
The latest addition to the artist’s participating in the charity release is not one of the legendary names in music by in many ways a far more appropriate body, a youth choir in Sri Lanka called ‘Soul Sounds’.
Having heard of the release on a radio broadcast in Sri Lanka , the choir spent the next three days tracking down the team involved in the ONE WORLD single and asked if they could participate with vocals, it seemed to all concerned the perfect addition , what could be more appropriate, as they explain themselves –
‘The Holy Family Convent choir of Colombo Sri Lanka are situated a stone’s throw from the waves that took the lives of so many neighbours, when Soundarie David the Musical Director of the choir heard Mike Read’s song for the world, he spent the next few days tracing those involved, and asking if our choir could be part of the venture to raise money for tsunami victims. We have now got some of our island’s leading singers to participate. They set about their task with Jerome De Silva the choir’s Manager/Producer and Neranjan De Silva their Sound Engineer/Advisor. A little bit of Sri Lanka’s soul at this time is in their effort. ‘
Vocals will be Recorded in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Friday.
‘ We are honoured to have the choir participate in the song. They have found a studio and will be recording in the next couple of days. It is clear that the spirit and courage of the choir will be a wonderful addition and we thank them for making the efforts to find us with all the other trials facing them.’

ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BBC NEWS 24 08.45 January 2nd 2005
Stars from the world of music including Sir Cliff Richard , Russell Watson , Robin Gibb , Boy George, Bill Wyman are coming together to raise money for the disasters in the Indian ocean with the release of a song which it is hoped will raise over £2 million for the relief effort. More artists are being added daily with recording starting tomorrow Wednesday in locations across the world.
The man behind the ‘ ONE WORLD’ project, is the composer and broadcaster Mike Read who has written the moving song entitled ‘ Grief never grows old’.
It is being produced by Steve Levine who has worked with everyone from the Beach Boys and Culture Club to Stevie Wonder.
Already the backing track has been recorded and sent to Sir Cliff and others with the aim of recording and finalising all those singing on the track by the 7th of January with recording and production to take place the week of the 14th so the song can be ready for release as soon as possible .
As Mike Read explains ‘ I was totally shocked at the enormity and suddeness of the disaster and in tears on seeing the orphaned children wandering aimlessly in search of their parents. Some of the newspaper photographs were just so harrowing …The impact of the destruction has hit us all and briefly speaking to my friends in the music world from artists to managers and record company executives , it was clear that they had all been touched in some way and wished to help.’
Already the ’One World’ project has guaranteed backing from the music giants Universal Records with pressing plants , production facilities and design teams all offering their services to make this a success.
All funds raised will go to The Disasters Emergency Committee. Their appeals manager Patricia Sanders was approached by Mike Read just hours after the disaster hit and the fund raising song was sent to her , since then there has been regular communication between all those involved in order that the fund raising can begin as quickly as possible with all monies coming directly to the D.E.C. bank account whose immediate task is to distribute the money to the initial target areas which include water, food, shelter, and medical supplies.
“As the relief and recovery operation gears up across Asia, the Disasters Emergency Committee welcomed Mike Read and others initiative/support, and announced that money donated to their Tsunami Earthquake Appeal from the sale of the song……….. would help the DEC agencies working in the region to rebuild survivors’ lives and livelihoods. Millions of people are having to come to terms with terrible loss. The DEC agencies will be working tirelessly to restore shattered lives, but this will take time. This is a marathon, not a sprint.”
