I have to feel rather sorry for 48 Hours. The first edition of their debut EP has been pressed up in a limited run of just 100 CDs, and look great in their glossy card sleeves. But on pulling the disc from its sleeve, small ribbons of foil cascaded onto my lap. No, not some fancy gimmick, but the surface of the CD. So that leaves just 99 copies, assuming the rest haven’t suffered from a similar manufacturing defect.
So I elected to download the press zip file and give the band a fair hearing. I’m glad I did, because the three tracks combine crunching guitars and sturdy rhythms with some accessible vocal melodies, without being completely wimpy. More about power chords than relentless chug, 48 Hours demonstrate an awareness of the importance of texture. A promising start, musically, if not in terms of physical product.
