Review: 'CROSBIE, DOUGIE'
'Choices & Ambitions (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: 'May 2013'

Our Rating:
A prolific songwriter, DOUGIE CROSBIE is a qualified sound engineer and has tremendous experience within the industry.

Having begun writing music at a very young age, Crosbie has gone on to support the likes of Hayseed Dixie, Wolfmother and Bad Religion. Now focussing on a stripped back sound, Crosbie's songs have a timeless feel which evokes such acts as Leonard Cohen, Bon Iver and Ray LaMontagne. Utilising vintage equipment and acoustic instruments, Crosbie's meticulous approach seeks to capture that pure "golden era" sound. Working with recording engineer Kevin Burleigh (Simple Minds, Glasvegas) and Joseph Palmaccio (Grammy winning mastering engineer from Nashville) on this EP has certainly helped, refining his sound to a great extent.

The EP opens with the delicate Always Hangin', Crosbie's distinct songwriting talents are clear from the off. Combining a delicate mix of acoustic chords with piano, Crosbie weaves his narrative. Vocally comparisons can be made with Alt-J singer Joe Newman and musically there are similarities to Jake Bugg, as well as fellow singer-songwriter Jesse Malin.

At times drifting and others howling, Crosbie’s musical understanding is clear. Before I Explode is another neat blend of acoustic guitar and organ moving more towards Nick Cave territory. Both uplifting and thought-provoking, Choices & Ambitions is a rich listen, revealing new elements on each visit.
The debut EP will be released on 27th May.
