The Guardian have praised Charlie Straight for making ‘the kind of joyful, harmony-driven Britpop Britain itself has forgotten how to master’. I’m not so sure that’s a good thing. Hasn’t Britpop had its day, and isn’t it all horribly passé into the second decade of the third millennium? I’m not having a pop at The Guardian here, per se. As winners of various awards, including 3 Grammys, not to mention their 50 thousand Facebook ‘fans’ and the 3.5 million YouTube views, Charlie Straight are clearly doing something right and have mass appeal.
‘I Sleep Alone’ is accessible, breezy and bursting with harmony, a jaunty fiddle adding a folksy edge to its indie/Britpop stylings. And it’s certainly not without merit. I believe ‘infectious’ is the word.
