Review: 'Albino'
'Brand New Fear'

-  Label: 'Guts for Garters'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '13th May 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'GUTS01'

Our Rating:
Albino are pitched as purveyors of punkabilly urban folk, ‘The Divine Comedy writing songs to play down the local boozer’ and frankly I can’t imagine anything worse.

Thankfully, they’re not that bad: ‘Brand New Fear’ comes on like ‘Rawhide’ with brass and a fiddle and is as witty as it is gritty. ‘Solarman’ is a slow barroom singalong about Yuri Gagarin that’s half Russian folk song, half Salvation Army brass band. It’s the offbeat choice of subject matter and its contrasting mode of delivery that make Albino an interesting proposition: ‘We Have Been Restored’ goes gospel country and sci-fi – at the same time. Perhaps more likely to appeal to fans of the Bonzo Dog Band than those of The Levellers, this release shows Albino to be fun and different - in a good way.
