Review: 'Master Musicians of Bukkake'
'Far West'

-  Album: 'Far West' -  Label: 'Important'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '10th June 2013'

Our Rating:
From the opening blast of whiplashing industrial noise and throbbing bass, ‘Far West’ slowly unravels to reveal myriad facets and textures. A martial drum hammers through a barren landscape on ‘Arche’, slowly rising in volume as it draws nearer, growing more dominant, ominous and more oppressive.

On the face of it, ‘Far West’ is a far cry from the enigmatic eastern vibes of the Master Musicians of Joujouka, but it doesn’t take much to realise that this is every bit as captivating as the sounds of the mystical Moroccan enchanters: the mantric drones of ‘Gnomi’ and ‘Cave of Light’ slowly creep under the skin, and the endless swell or organ on ‘You Dream Your Dream Like a Dreamer – The Dark Peace’, which stretches out for a cosmic eternity is both transcendental and unsettling in equal measure. The final track, ‘Circular Ruins’ is by far the most conventional, beginning as a lilting slice of psychedelic folk that shines like the end of a very elaborately constructed tunnel before blooming like the breaking dawn.

The expansive atmospherics, rich in detail and texture and drawing influence from myriad sources, forge a psychotropic soundtrack to an interior film that’s often beautiful, but at times unsettling. The darker moments are as likely to induce defecation as ejaculation, but make no mistake, ‘Far West’ is one awe-inspiring journey.
