Two years on from the pulverizing ‘Iiron’, COH return with an altogether different sonic perspective, and while its predecessor was grating, heavy and industrial, ‘Retro 2038’ is altogether softer and more fluid. The reference points this album evokes are likewise rather different from its predecessor.
The first track, ‘Retroctech Overture’ is more Kraftwerk than NIN, and marks the beginning of a free-floating wibbly wobbly journey that transports the listener out of this world and to another fuzzy dimension. Microbeats glitch and flicker through the sparse, spacious ‘Time to Time’, while extraterrestrial sonar echoes through ‘In Wings of Gravity’. Squidgy, squelchy analogue tones encircle and envelop the listener, rumbling interminably through ‘Vainiao’ and ‘Method as Fun’, to infinity – and beyond.
