It’s a familiar story: a bunch of guys meet at art school in Brighton and develop a shared passion for explosive noise, surreal lyrics, driving motorik beats and free improvisation – whilst never forgetting to keep a solid song foundation. Unsurprisingly, it’s the background bio for newcomers Eyes & No Eyes too. If their story is something of a cliché, then their debut single, which contains across its two tracks precisely 11 minutes and eight seconds of sound, is at least a bit different. Spacious, atmospheric, and incorporating elements of The Incredible String Band style psychedelic folk and early Floyd as played by some tripped-out indie boys with bad shirts and a penchant for space rock (not to mention a knack for building tension from a slow, lugubrious violin drone), it’ss curious and compelling. Unexpectedly promising, and surprisingly good.
