Our Rating:
‘I Promise You Always The Sky’ is the debut release from Love Echo, an ambient pop duo currently based in Paris. Prior to this the band had only released two tracks, but had already created a buzz in the music world. The band comprises producer Vic Miranda, and vocalist Vicki Glass.

There are ten tracks on the album, (the tenth track cunningly titled ‘Eleven’) and they all feature a really dreamy synth pop that never jars or irritates, in fact quite the opposite. Vicki’s vocals are soft and breathy, the nearest comparison would be to Nouvelle Vague, although the musical style is completely different.

Overall, it is a perfect chill out album. in fact I think doctors should prescribe this on the NHS for anyone suffering from stress. The downside of this is that it can at times feel a little samey, as if we’ve covered the same ground before, but that is just a minor criticism.

Arguably the best track on the album is a cover of The Cure’s ‘Lovecats’, which is done with the right laid back attitude to add a new dimension to the song. The music having been completely rewritten, though the original lyrics are retained.

Another track that makes waves is ‘Control’, and on this I did wonder if the band has a really subtle sense of humour, as the mechanistic electronic drum beat is similar in parts to Joy Division’s ‘She’s Lost Control’.

The publicity blurb states “Maybe there’s a second album in there somewhere, but we’re not thinking too far ahead”. I hope so, because on this album the duo sound so laid back that they’re virtually horizontal. It would be nice to see them step outside their comfort zone and tackle something a bit more meaty, but as debuts go, you could do far worse than this.
