Review: 'SILENT COMEDY, THE'
'Friends Divide EP'

-  Label: 'Singleton Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '10th June 2013'

Our Rating:
The Silent Comedy are a hairy four man band from San Diego formed by the Zimmerman brothers, Joshua and Jeremiah.

The biblical names can be explained by the fact that they are sons of a preacher man and they say they are inspired by an unlikely combination of bar culture and revivalist meetings.

So, while their roots lie in the beer and cocktail scene in California, their songs refer to, but fall short of endorsing, the sleazier side of modern urban life.

The six track EP opens in punchy fashion with the single God Neon, a straight ahead rock song in the style of Foo Fighters (and countless others). This sees the siblings drawn to the bright lights and sinner's paradise of big cities and finding that these have a habit of getting their its claws into you.

Always Two is their 'everybody hurts' song with surprisingly soppy lyrics: "No darling don't be sad - sometimes dreams don't ever come true".

Light Of Day is about looking for reasons to be cheerful while the upbeat pop of Simple Thing was apparently born of the desire to write a happy song about being unhappy. It offers advice on how you need to know yourself but to beware of "the devil hiding in your heart".

The songs on the EP were built around the concept that those closest to you will be the ones who cause the most heartbreak.

The record closes with You Don't Know Me, a break up song with a rough demo acoustic quality and a the more affirmative and polished "come on and dance" message of Ghosts

All this is done in a crisp radio friendly manner without departing from the classic old school rock template.

Being free of the hard-boiled cynicism that often goes with the territory, these are songs that sober church goers and boozy revellers can embrace.
