Our Rating:
This is,quite simply, a beautiful collection of songs with elegant, mainly acoustic, arrangements that showcase the purity of Ruth Moody's voice and the poetry of her words.

The songs have an honesty and authenticity you come to expect from Gillian Welch; One And Only even sounds a little like Welch's Miss Ohio.

Her confidence is shown with the bold and effective bluegrass version of Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark which breathes new life into this familiar song.

Ruth Moody was born is Australia but is a Canadian resident - the album is even partly financed by the Government of Canada!

She is a founder and current member of the consistently excellent Wailin' Jennys.

This is her second solo album; the follow up to The Garden from 2010.

The opening tune - Trouble And Woe - carries the key themes for the record: trouble, woe, sadness and tears made bearable by the promise by love, joy and mystery.

There isn't a bad song but the title track is something really special. Moody says it's the song which is closest to her heart and was therefore the most emotional to record.

Although it doesn't come directly from grieving, These Wilder Things is a song of triumph over inner pain and sorrow as powerful as Beth Nielsen Chapman's Sand And Water. It concludes with the line"I will waste my heart on fear no more" from A Morning Offering by Irish poet John O'Donohue.

The "love is everything"sentiment of the closing track Nothing Without Love, may not be very original but when it is expressed with such clarity and grace, you take note of the message with fresh ears.
