The phrase ‘singer songwriter’ on a press release usually sets me off yawning before I’ve even got the CD in the player these days, so Lydia Baylis’ debut single comes as something of a refreshing change. It’s not acoustic or folky, but a work of mid-tempo pop that marries guitar and ethereal synths to a slightly trip-hoppy beat that boasts a strong yet dreamy chorus. As the comparisons to Dido made by others suggest, it’s not exactly groundbreaking stuff, but it’s also better than such touchstones would lead you to believe, and it’s a very promising start.
