Our Rating:
‘Growing Young’ is the debut download release from DIRTY THRILLS, a quartet who play good heavy blues rock like it should be played. The band comprises Louis James on vocals, Jack Fawdry on guitar, Jamie Hopkins on bass and Steve Corrigan on drums. They were formed as recently as October 2012, but you’d be very hard pushed to hear any inexperience in their music – they play together so naturally it seems like they’ve been together for decades.

‘Growing Young’ is a four track E.P. much in the vein of heavy blues rock greats, such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and more recent bands like The Black Keys and John the Conqueror. Opening with the track ‘Shivers’, the band doesn’t let up, this is heavy guitar blues rock at its best. Louis’ vocal style comes across along with some of the best blues rock shouters, and the lyrics are interesting and thought provoking: - “Baby, call off the sun, I’m coming down/ Crazy, those shifting eyes, that burning sound/ If not for a second ago, I had this all in control/ But now it’s caving in, I can’t drown my demons.

The title track of the E.P. is another heavy blues rock track, the lyrics of which deal with coming of age: - “Way back from childhood, way back when I was young/ Came the strength and the wisdom to succeed/ I learnt from my elders the knowledge was key/ And would help me come and hold my dreams."

The tempo is slowed down briefly for ‘Drunk Words’, a song detailing relationship problems. Whilst it’s great to see that the band are capable of excelling at more than just one tempo, for me this was the least satisfying of the four songs.

However, with ‘You’re In Trouble Now’, they're right back in that scuzzy groove, and it sounds perfect. The bass sounds a lot heavier on this track, which really adds to the atmosphere. Again, Louis seems to throw down an excellent vocal, which makes this probably the best of the four tracks: - “Just sell yourself short one more time/ just blur your memories, walk the line/ Burn your bridges, stand alone. Drag your heart to find a home/ You’re in trouble now, my boy”.

Overall, I really liked this E.P. This is a band that clearly gives 100%, and as they’re such nice chaps, they’ve already put all four tracks on YouTube as karaoke versions. Well worth checking out and screaming along to!

This is a band well worth looking out for. I think they’ll be a real hit.
