Boogarins are Brazilian duo Fernando Almeida and Benke Ferraz, who met in high school in Goiâna and came together over a love of psychedelic pop. ‘As Plantas Que Curam’ (trans: ‘Plants that Heal’) sees these influences shine through, but filtered though myriad cultural and stylistic reference points to create a work of kaleidoscopic dreamy pop jammed with hooks and melodies.
‘Lucifernandis’ drifts and spirals through a lilting chord sequence and is dreamy and strangely nostalgic, ‘Erre’ is psychedelic 60s pop filtered through a shoegaze lazer light show. ‘Infinu’ sounds like The Doors playing a theme to a spaghetti Western, while the Latin-flavoured slow rock ‘n’ roll stylings of ‘Despreocupar’ sees elements of Merseybeat break through, with what sounds like a nod to the Overlanders’ ‘Michelle’ thrown in for good measure. Melancholy hues filter through the breezy jangle of ‘Doce’, half Byrds, half Las, completely Boogarins.

If it sounds like a bit of a hotch-potch, it is and it isn’t: the diverse reference points may seem incongruous and often arrive as a surprise, but the overall result is remarkably coherent, making ‘As Plantas Que Curam’ one of the most intriguing, innovative and enjoyable pop albums I’ve heard all year.
