Sometimes, you get lucky. I’m talking about as a music fan, discovering a band early on and watching them grow, evolve and develop. It’s not all about one-upmanship, having the opportunity to tell anyone who’ll listen that you saw them first, when they were bottom of the bill, playing to three people and the barman, and claiming them as ‘your’ band – although that’s indisputably a part of it. So yes, I’m going to be smug about this: I first caught Hull act La Bête Blooms propping up the bill at a local venue here in York. By the following summer, they’d snagged a mid-afternoon slot on the second stage at Galtres festival.

Their second single release entirely justifies their rising profile: ‘Sigh Away’ has a nice classic indie jangle, but equally a grungey edge, coupled with some suitably angsty lyrics about love, hate and ageing, and an infectious melody. Put simply, it’s a classic alt-rock tune with a keen accessibility, and it’s ace.
