Review: 'SPIRYTUS'
'Fundamentals EP'

-  Label: 'GMI'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '13th January 2014'

Our Rating:
This is SPIRYTUS' comeback EP after they sacked on of the band's guitarists and replaced him with a turntablist, as you do when you want to be known as a groove metal outfit. This 8 track EP is more of a short/ mini album and while the press release may claim they sound like a cross between Korn and Faith No More to my ears they are far more a clash between Mordred and Atom Seed, which is fine my me.

The quiet sampled opening of Fundamentals doesn't quite prepare you for the hell that then breaks loose and sounds very much like Mordred did in the late 80's/early 90's with the odd hint of the heaviest end of the Beastie Boys thrown in for added crunch.

Quandahar has the most scratching of the tracks and over brutal riffs that slide between the scratches are shouted lyrics about death and destruction of Afghanistan that even after several listens I can't quite pin down. This is a pattern throughout the EP and is just about how Ryan Walton lets rip with his rather powerful voice hammering against the cacophony around him.

The band's best chance at a floor filler for me is Patience Of A Saint, with one of those sweary choruses about being on a shoot to kill mission that sounds almost perfect for a mosh pit to sing along to as they try to batter each other in a circle pit.

The EP doesn't let up and keeps coming at you with harder and heavier tunes with lyrics that seem to be about the state of the world and the hell it has become for some. Hopefully some of the tunes will eventually stick in your brains and should go down a treat live. If you like early 90's Dance Metal then Spirytus need to be checked out now.
