'The Topsy Turvy World Of Turnips'

-  Album: 'The Topsy Turvy World Of Turnips'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '13th January 2014'

Our Rating:
‘The Topsy Turvy World Of Turnips’? Really? Thankfully, it’s not nearly as bad as the title suggests (let’s face it, it wouldn’t be difficult), but then nor is it as great as the band’s name implies.

SDR are Rob and Will Turner, two brothers based in Manchester. Their thing is acoustic-led indie folk with a wistful, melancholic tinge. There are some nice, sad melodies and harmonies that really pull on the heartstrings. Occasionally, psych influences creep in, as on ‘King of Plebs’, and there are some neat little lyrical turns.

There are some jaunty indie-rock moments that are unquestionably great, and ‘Groggy days in Shitsville’ is reminiscent of a plethora of mid-90s post-grunge acts but is well executed and boasts a great riff combined with a melody that hooks the listener. But in the main, it’s all pretty standard: pleasant and listenable, and carrying an appealing pop edge, it’s all rather pedestrian and all too unremarkable in the main.
