Review: '8 Foot Sativa'
'The Shadow Masters'

-  Album: 'The Shadow Masters'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal'

Our Rating:
I’m not exactly au fait with the New Zealand metal scene, and given the country’s population can’t imagine it’s that large, although microscenes are often extremely interesting and remarkably innovative – or extreme – having been given space to evolve apart from the general musical mass. If 8 Foot Sativa are in any way representative, the NZ scene is pretty ferocious.

My research suggests that a sativa can grow up to 10 feet in height, but we’re not talking about the kind of plan you’re likely to grow in the greenhouse or airing cupboard here. In short, an 8 foot sativa would be a dopesmoker’s paradise. I rather suspect that all the hash in the world wouldn’t sedate these guys.

‘The Shadow Masters’ is brutal. The guitars are crisp and tear at the speakers, the vocals are harsh and penetrating. The occasional symphonic break just manages to avoid cheesiness, and instead provides some much-needed contrast and brief respite from the onslaught. Heavy duty stuff.
