This is the face of music in 2014. The music industry model has been declared all but dead, the charts are worthless and no-one buys physical releases. Breaking bands by social networking’s been done, and in the wake of The Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen, saturation and the demise of MySpace more or less killed that approach off and the old-school approach of taking it on the road and winning audiences over in a live setting isn’t always practical as travel is costly and results from support slots can be hit and miss at best.
Law Holt is trying another approach: releasing her debut EP on-line for free and spreading the word though a concerted PR campaign contains seven tracks which showcase her dark soul stylings and unique vocal talents over musical accompaniments that draw on a range of styles.
The trip-hoppy ‘Number One’ features ragga and dub elements, while ‘Comic Strips’ is more downbeat and atmospheric and finds Law singing in a throaty croon. The minimalist ‘Treasure’ is ethereal and atmospheric, the beats keeping their distance while Law’s voice floats around in the ether. It’s a contrast to the more abrasive, beat-heavy ‘Scrambled’.

It’s hard to really describe Law’s voice in an accurate or meaningful way, or to define its qualities: it’s rich and resonant but capable of soaring. It’s certainly unusual, and in a good way, being listenable and compelling, and sits well with all of the styles and forms presented here. No question that coupled with some strong material, Law’s is a voice that stands out.
