Review: 'Bill Parton Trio'
'Bill Parton Trio (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '24th March 2014'

Our Rating:
I’m assuming Bill is no relation to Dolly, although I suspect if there was a connection, the country queen would be forced to deny it. Australian act Bill Parton Duo, making their UK debut with this 6 track EP release, cite Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Zero 7 and Coldplay amongst their numerous reference points. And just when the mellow piano pop balladry of the EP’s first song, ‘Closer Now’ reaches what is surely the apex of blandness, there’s a rap section. What decade are we in?

Sure, ‘Falling for You’ has a ’classic’ feel to it – by which I mean it’s been done a million times before. They may claim Beatles influences, and sure, there are some clean harmonies in there, but the bongo and piano backing on ‘So Unfair’ says it all, really. This is self-absorbed, mediocre muso music. The Coldplay comparisons contained in the press release actually do Chris Martin and his masters of drab a disservice: hell, it’s not even Keane.

Meanwhile, they’ve already won massive critical online support and radio play in their native Oz, not to mention landing themselves domestic chart spots and nominations that have seen them place in award semi finals and even finals at home. Being as painfully dull as they are, the chances are their rise will be unstoppable from here.
