Bringing more dynamic audio from the finest bands in the locality, ONIR may be the Barnsley-based label with the longest name, but they’re also the one with the greatest commitment to quality releases. McCarthy Vigil’s eponymous EP release – only so named apparently because the band couldn’t agree on a title beyond ‘Dog Beans’, which was ditched because it was absurd – is a case in point.
Containing a trio of noodly, doodly prog-tinged mini-epics, ‘McCarthy Vigil’ is the work of a band who’ve got ideas – lots of ideas – and the technical competence to execute them. Best of all, they don’t allow their technical side to detract from the songs themselves. ‘Luxury Pets’ has harmony, melody and a slacker vibe, while ‘Swell Guy’ is an exploratory odyssey with an almost jazz-tinged bass groove. ‘The Wives’ is different again, and builds in a classic post-rock fashion without actually being post rock. It’s a promising start, and no mistake, and would be good even if it was called ‘Dog Beans’ or anything else for that matter.
