Review: 'Candy Says'
'Not Kings'

-  Album: 'Not Kings'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '28th May 2014'

Our Rating:
Frothy synths and bratty, trashy pop vocals on the title track kick the album off in fine and feisty fashion, and over the course of the 12 songs on ‘Not Kings’ Candy says pursue a range of variant shades of sassy pop that crosses indie, lo-fi and electro with an impressive lightness of touch. ‘C’est Pas Comme Ca’ brings a theatrical dash, and ‘Lord’s Mistake’ is a sprightly romp and there’s a hazy 60s hue over ‘Hummingbird.’

It’s not all soft-centres either, with some crunchy edges and solid beats in the mix. It’s anything but a negative when I say there are some nice tunes on this album: without nice tunes, it’s not pop, and Candy Says definitely play sweet – but not sickly – pop.
