When two bands come together, what do they make? Beautiful music? A split EP? In the case of Asian Babes (who aren’t Asian) and Future Glue, a SexXx Tape. Why? Because it’s released on cassette tape (and download), and it’s a veritable orgy of contrasting yet complimentary guitar-driven racket that’s all about the DIY underground aesthetic and the art, and not giving a crap about mainstream or even particularly widespread acceptance. Which means, of course, that this is the apex of alternative cool.
Asian Babes throw a whole heap of stuff into the blender, and the result is pretty wild. ‘Rosalee’ sound like Shonen Knife jamming a new song in the rehearsal room, while ‘Dry Burger’ is a 40-second garage punk thrashabout. I can only imagine what it might be about. The shouty rockabilly racket of ‘John Cooper Clark’s’ is big on energy, and ‘Sting’ does just that.

It’s very much an EP of two halves: while Asian Babes pack four songs into four and a half minutes, Future Glue fill eight minutes with a single track. Described as ‘a group of steaming Glaswegians making a big racket of powerful and energetic, rockabilly and blues tinged punk’, their offering is a sprawling psychedelic beast of a tune. As the tempo picks up so does the venom and then it all explodes into a frenzy of cymbals and reverb. Steaming they may be (that’s a Glasgae heng), but there’ warped genius at play here too.
