Review: 'Crookes, The'
'Soapbox'

-  Album: 'Soapbox' -  Label: 'Fierce Panda'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th April 2014'

Our Rating:
It all kicks off with lead single ‘Play Dumb’ with heavy echoes of The Smiths at their most upbeat and playful, and a dash of Arctic Monkeys’ no-messing confidence. Sweetly chiming guitars and an insistent bassline underpin wistful vocals on ‘Echolalia’, and if The Smiths are again evoked, so are Orange Juice: The Crookes know how to snag the listener with nagging guitar-lines and tidy hooks, but the bittersweet melancholy never slips to self-pity or dirginess: they’re all about the uptempo, breezy indie sound and they seriously work it with positive results. Nice.
