Review: 'MULLAN. LOTTE'
'Claw Marks EP'

-  Label: 'Raindog Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '26th May 2014'

Our Rating:
This Suffolk born singer bridges the gap between melodic folk and new country. Her previous two albums specialised in bittersweet songs which, in tunes like 'La La Love You', bordered on the just plain soppy. In this four track taster for her new album, there are no such sugar-coatings.

Instead we hear songs for jilted lovers motivated more by hate than love. There are none of the 'I wish the best for you' platitudes since forgiving and forgetting are not high on her agenda. The metaphorical Claw Marks to the heart cut deep.

Made in Nashville with Band of Horses' Bill Reynolds, the songs are filled with venom and driven by vengeance. The effect is all the more striking as she sounds more resigned than resentful.

In I Hope It Breaks Your Heart the lines "You know I really liked your mom, just found I didn't like her son" are delivered with Morrissey-esque precision.

Meanwhile,I Don't Believe You catalogues a history of promises broken plus fake declarations of love and on Bad For Me there's talk of salt in wounds, stings in tales and the object of all this disaffection is "the last of all answers to my prayers".

Make no mistake, this is a woman who bears grudges.
