As song titles go, ‘I’m Going to Buy Food’ is about as mundane as it gets. Musically, it’s anything but, being 2:28 of sonic strangeness, reminiscent in parts of The Fall’s early 80s experimental tracks, and then in the choruses… Is the tape wrecked or my tape deck knackered? Wait, it’s digital. Is there something wrong with the recording? Did the tape warp in the studio? Have these guys ever heard of a guitar tuner?
‘I’m Going to Buy Food’ is the first track to appear from Los Cripis’ fourth album, and it’s a work of genius. The half sung, half-spoken lyrics are a straightforward narrative about looking for a market to, er, buy some food. Its brilliance is its simplicity, the jaw-dropping audacity of celebrating the hum-drum without even pandering to conventional elements of songwriting like rhyme, rhythm or tune. Unquestionably weird, staggeringly shambolic, but strangely wonderful.
