Review: 'Nightfell'
'The Living Ever Mourn'

-  Album: 'The Living Ever Mourn' -  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '26th May 2014'

Our Rating:
The press release tells us that this album was ‘envisioned and executed in a period of grief, delirium and loss of life, the atmosphere and lyrics mirror the ensuing emptiness while simultaneously embracing the dichotomous power in the unwavering and eternal force of Death.’

On hearing the album, it takes but a moment to appreciate his isn’t mere hyperbole. Raising the curtain on an album with a six and a half minute slab of heavyweight guitar punishment is nothing if not a statement of intent. The power chords shudder and grind… and then the thunderous double kick drumming thuds in, with Todd Burdette’s guttural vocals growling away low in the mix. ‘The Last Disease’ sounds terminal and is gut-wrenchingly brutal, and that’s only the start.

Don’t expect any uplifting anthems, or even cracks of light here: ‘The Living Ever Mourn’ is dark and unrelentingly heavy. And that’s precisely the point: its explores, in depth, a certain mindset, a specific emotional territory. It’s truly crushing. Wallow in it.
