Our Rating:
Released in February but now available in this country via Rough Trade is the new single by GOMINA and it’s another slice of pop heaven, although perhaps this time tinged with a bit of melancholy. Could it be a love song perhaps? It’s a funny thing but you know when you get into a song in isolation and sing it to yourself and get into the words and then later you find out the words are slightly different and so it is a completely different song? Well this is one of those times for me. It turns out Neera is a name and not a preposition. Never mind, all the best songs are like this.

Stupid has an awesome fouty second intro that is hard to describe, it’s like a crescendo that doesn’t really crescendo, remaining constant instead and then it breaks off and the track is up and running. The swirly organ reminds me of Inspiral Carpets but there is an intense grinding almost underneath that puts me in mind of something else a bit darker. This band use a lot of keyboards but they select the sounds so well that they manage to get about four vastly different sounds to somehow work together without any need for a pesky guitarist. Or even a vocal chorus. The melodies are so damn fine. And that bass is always popping and bumping along. The track starts slowly fading away after four minutes like all good love affairs. And like all good love affairs it leaves me wanting more and with more questions than answers. Why Stupid? Maybe there are some clues in the video which is really quite cool but then again maybe not? I would describe Stupid as ‘happycholia’.

The B side She Falls is also pretty solid. It features a rap from COEFF (in French so what’s not to like and you can really go to town on making up lyrics) and has got kind of a Gorillaz vibe to it to these ears. Personally I think I prefer Gominas’ vocals to those of Damon Albarn. I thought the last single was good but this is easily its equal and if they can get anywhere near these high standards with the upcoming album then it is going to be an absolute belter. Gomina getcha.
