It’s fair to say that the fields of heavy rock and metal are very much male domains when it comes to performing artists. Solo female artists are even less common, making Pryti immediately appear as something different. Her debut album, ‘Tales of a Melancholic’, however, is strong on its own merits and showcases some quality songwriting.
The sweepingly anthemic ‘Insomnia’ makes for a powerful opener. The guitars tear through the speakers on the slow grunge of ‘The Abyss’ and there’s a tangible emotional depth to thunderous rock-outs like ‘Angst’ and the cinematic ‘Purge’. Pryti’s big on melody and as strong musically as vocally.
The mix and overall production helps: while there’s a tendency to place female vocals way up in the mix, Pryti’s sound is more balanced. It also serves to emphasise Pryti’s rock credentials, and it’s to her great credit that ‘Tales of a Melancholic is far from being a pop album but still has a very definite commercial appeal.
