Another day, another band with ‘wolf’ in their name... This one all starts off so promisingly: a taut, jaw-grindingly tense and aggressive riff, thunderous drumming and menacing vocals power the intro and verse of the EPs first track ‘Dying on the Inside’. There’s a Ministry-like weight and density to it and just as I’m starting to get excited and forgive them the cliché wolf moniker, they go all lame and drop in a big, stadium-friendly chorus. What the what?
‘The Devil You Know’ also breaks a heavy verse with an anthemic chorus, and while it’s not actually bad it does seem to undermine the force of the song. Still, it’s a definite step up from their previous release, and ‘Blind’ really rams hard, an overloading explosion of overdriven guitars and tendon-snapping vocals. They go all out for the emotive heartstring puller with the slower, longer ‘Heartless’ that closes the EP. With a long, gradual fadeout, it seems like a safe and rather disappointing conclusion to a release that could have delivered so much more oomph.
