They’ve received some impressive accolades, not least of all being named as ‘best duo’ in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for 2013, and hailed by ‘The Independent on Sunday’ as ‘English folk’s Buckingham-Nicks’. Sean may not be as well-known as his brother Seth, although he’s contributed guitar work to his sibling’s recordings, and not only produced his albums, but also work by The Levellers, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, Imelda May and Bellowhead. It’s fair to say he brings much to the musical output produced with his wife, Kathryn Roberts, who is gifted with a superb voice.
Having spent almost a decade away between their previous two releases (‘2’ in 2003 and ‘Hidden People’ in 2012) that they’ve followed up so swiftly with ‘Tomorrow Will Follow Today’ is sure to please fans, and it’s unlikely to disappoint, either.
The 10 songs on ‘Tomorrow Will Follow Today’ have their roots in traditional folk, and while the point to the artists taking those traditional elements and adding a ‘contemporary twist’ may sound cliché, what distinguishes Roberts & Lakeman from so many contemporary folk artists is the sheer quality of their material and its execution, moreover, ‘Tomorrow Will Follow Today’ has range, and doesn’t dwell on inward-looking musings. Instead, their focus is varied, looking outwards at the world and back on history and draws from a range of sources to create something that has depth and is accessible without being mere fluff.
