Supposedly merging dub and house but in actuality seeming to combine elements of Krautrock with the spacious electronic sounds one might associate with an artist like Vangelis and some of New Order’s mellower moments, 99 Blows creates soundscapes that billow and drift rather than mark a clear trajectory.
The processed robotix vocals make it sound more like something from ‘Tomorrow’s World’ back in the late 70s or early 80s on a segment about the music of the future. While it’s pleasant enough, ‘I/O’ seems a little lacking in focus or direction, and equally, ambition or excitement.
