York’s stickybackplastics’ second outing marks a tangible shift from their eponymous debut to push the blusier side of their sound to the fore. They’ve kept things direct and unpolished, and it works well with the four tracks here.
‘Psychodreamer’ incorporates a trippy, psychedelic folk edge to their dark, Garbage-influenced brooding alt-rock sound. The unusual stepped vocal melody is the real hook, while behind it a spiral of phase launches the song somewhere into the stratosphere. ‘You Told Me’ actually has echoes of Tracy Chapman, only rocked up, punked up and spoiling for a fight. It possesses a rawness that has the edge of a live performance, and ‘Sick Man’ brings some bluster, making for a thrilling set.

If their debut intimated that stickybackplastics would be ones to watch, ‘Reptile Smile’ confirms it.
