Ok, so the opening bars of lead track ‘Free’ sounds like an amalgamation of at least two dozen indie / alternative tunes from the 90s, not least of all The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m in Love’ and ‘Get the Message’ by Electronic, with Dodgy, The Bluetones, The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr all thrown in the mix. Which is cool: the immediate sense of familiarity brings with it all the hallmarks of a classic breezy tune. With an uplifting sentiment to match the breezy melodic tune, it ticks more boxes than the under-budget 4-bed country house with stables and acre of land that the couples always love on ‘Escape to the Country’.
The other three tracks prove it’s no fluke. ‘Born to Run’ brngs bags of energy, while the easy-going style of ‘She Doesn’t Miss You’ harks back to the Britpop era, and in all, it makes for a neat package that shows they’ve got game.
