Evolving from Simon Micklethwaite’s solo musical project under the guise of Muttley, York four-piece Muttley Crew’s debut album shows that have have a dastardly knack for hypnotic psychedelic drone.
While people are going nuts for Hookworms and their heavy noise take on Krautrock, Muttley Crew are very much focused on the guitars, and with Nine Black Alps’ Sam Forrest on production duties, the guitars layer up into dense walls of sound.
‘The Game’ sounds like a Black Angels 33 being played at 45, that hazy psychedelic groove rushing to the finish in a blurry sonic fog, while ‘Crooked Sky’ really mines that Black Angels vibe at regular pace, Micklethwaite’s vocal all but lost in a swamp of reverb, along with the guitars and thudding, motoric drums. If ‘The Kiss is It’ reveals a breezier, poppier side, it’s an example of breezy pop a la The Jesus and Mary Chain. Ultimately, it’s the six and a half minute ‘Celluloid’ encapsulates the band’s sound as it builds to a blistering crescendo, the searing guitars riding to a crest on a wave of repetition and a relentless rhythm.
