Review: 'Maff'
'Maff EP'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '6th July 2015'

Our Rating:
From the moment the first majestic chords are struck, Maff build a sense of drama and tension, and within a few bars things are already getting exciting: with the soaring guitars of post-rock and the blurry FX-soaked gauze of shoegaze, they also incorporate the dynamism of post-punk revivalism (early Editors, Interpol) to forge a sound that’s exhilarating, immense, and dynamic.

With eight tracks, it’s pretty much an album, but that’s no complaint, because they pack it with songs that are by turns dreamy and tense. ‘Linger Around’ is a reverb-drenched sliver of dream-pop, driven by some explosive drumming and a gloriously splindly guitar line that hints at old-school goth. Elsewhere, hollerin’ garage tracks echo amidst cathedrals of sound, reminiscent of early Ride.

The multifarious elements and influences are melded together in the most dextrous and natural of ways, and without any loss of focus on the all-important aspect of ‘the song’. The result is something special.
