Shock of shocks, ‘III’ is the third album from Belgian stoner doom duo SardoniS. They’re described as a ‘two-headed and riff-worshiper beast’ and promise ‘an incredibly loud and colossal stoner-influenced doom-metal that crushes and rumbles with same power of an enraged Mammoth’. Now, as mammoths have been extinct for some 3,600 years, it’s a claim that’s hard to qualify, but as the shortest track on this colossal five-track album lumbers in at six heavyweight minutes, the analogy seems reasonable enough as ‘The Coming of Kahn’ brings monumental riffage propelled by thunderous drumming.
Occasionally lurching into heavy prog territory, much to the dismay of the pterodactyls, for the most part their instrumental workouts remain focused on the riff rather than the dynamics or diversity.

Heavy hints of latter-day Earth run through the slow, trundling final track, the twelve-minute ‘Forward to the Abyss’, built around a repetitive guitar motif and a trudging rhythm section that’s as weighty as you like.
